Historical facts about Turnau

Turnau consists of the localities of Göriach, Au, Seewiesen, Stübming, Thal and Turnau and has a total area of over 134 km².

 

Turnau was first mentioned in documents in 1268. The findings on the church wall showed that the church must have been built in the 14th century.

 

The municipality, which has been elevated to market town status since 1960, has an altitude of 784 m above sea level.

 

The highest elevation in the municipality is the "Ringkamp" (2,155 m), while the lowest point is 730 m above sea level west of Turnau.

  • The well-known folk play “s'Nullerl” by Carl Morré was created in Turnau. The original setting is also in our town. “s' Nullerl” has already been performed at the Court Theatre in St. Petersburg and nine times in a row in New York

  • until the 1950s, brown coal was mined in Turnau. The former Ägydi tunnel in Au now serves as a chapel. A large number of prehistoric finds were unearthed during mining

  • Numerous international ski races take place every year in Turnau. Anna Veith has already won here

  • With the help of two small hydroelectric power plants, Turnau would be able to be energy self-sufficient on an annual average.
